A Thread for Ftk to avoid science and get personal

I’m starting this thread so that everyone’s favorite science-denying, soccer mom can get to know me. Laughably, she accused me of trolling on a thread about Dr. Behe’s mousetrap example of Irreducible Complexity. My crime?

Discussing the mousetrap example of Irreducible Complexity. I know, stupid me. In the same thread, she asked me the following questions (which are apparently appropriate on a science thread):

So….tell me about Blipey. Married? Kids? Brothers, sisters? Where did you go to college? Have any normal friends there?

So, here is the perfect thread to discuss those things; maybe she’ll drop by and ask a few questions?

Best piece of physical theatre I’ve seen in some time

I was flipping through channels at my hotel the other night and saw this guy in the middle of his audition for So You Think You Can Dance? Amazing. He might not be the best popper I’ve ever seen (then again, he might be), but his sense of flow and theatrical flair make him the most engaging popper I’ve ever seen.

This video is going to be required watching for all my theatre students until the end of time.

Bad BBQ, Blues to die for

Charleston, SC

I can’t say I’m a fan of Carolina BBQ. Granted, this is personal taste, but I HATE vinegar. Carolina BBQ really does nothing right in my opinion. First, there’s the vinegar based sauce (actually having a sauce may be a nod over Memphis style BBQ, but I hesitate to confirm). Secondly, there’s the chopped meat aspect–who dices meat for BBQ? Thirdly, there’s the slaw; why would you serve perfectly good meat over cole slaw? What can I say; I’m from Kansas City.

South Carolina, however, came up roses as concerns a second passion of mine–the blues. We’re doing shows in Charleston this week and got lucky enough to be here during the Low Country Blues Bash. There are blues bands spreading happiness all over the city this week. This evening I went to The Pour House and heard Eddie Shaw and the Wolfgang. This is the best blues band I’ve heard in 2 years. Eddie “Vaan” Shaw Jr. may be the best guitar player I’ve ever heard–controlled, crisp, expressive, fantastic.

The Pour House is a blues joint through and through. There’s no food, only beverage. They have a nice beer list, about a dozen or so on tap and several dozen bottles. I had an Allagash Brewery Trippleboch for the first time. This was a very nice beer; a tad sweet to drink a lot of, but quite good. The liquor list is short but the drinks are good.

If you’re in Charleston in February make sure you check out some of the Blues Fest.

New Hampshire had a Primary?

Chattanooga, TN

Clinton who? Where’s McCain again?

Ah, the wonders of a news day in small town America. Michelle and I performed in Henderson, KY the last couple days and the local paper came out and did a story at our second school on Tuesday. Some of the more astute out there might also recall that there was some national political goings-on that same day. Apparently Henderson couldn’t have cared less about that. We were the lead story, A-1, above the fold in Wednesday’s paper, followed by that stuff that went on in New Hampshire (sure, they were A-1, but below the fold). Or, maybe we just take better pictures than politicians.

I found something on my birthday trip

Well, a couple of people (yes, I believe that is the correct small number) have been wondering why A Clown in the Middle has been gathering cobwebs.

Short answer? My interests lie outside of writing–tangential, related, but ultimately moving toward different endpoints. On the road with the tour, this blog was a good way of spouting off about things without having to annoy Janell. It was also a good way to catalog some of the places and things I wanted to remember. However, now that I’m back at home and working in town, the blog fairly far out of mind. I like to be on stage, not behind the keyboard or pencil all that much.

However, I’m on the road again now. Only for the weekend, but it is very reminiscent of the tour. I traveled 380 miles to Garden City, Kansas to perform in the Tumbleweed Festival with StoneLion Puppet Theatre. We’re doing 3 shows this weekend, teaching a workshop, and doing some roving entertainment.

If you’re near Garden City, come out and see the festival–plenty of things for adults and kids alike. If you make it out, I’ll buy you a beer (I find it very unlikely that anyone is close to Garden City).

This being my birthday, combined with the similarity of my tour, I thought this would be a good next entry point. Thanks to those few who have checked in now and again–I can’t promise a lot of content in the future, but I’ll try harder.

Anyone know a good counsellor for DaveScot?

Yes. Dave has eplied again. I think it is interesting to note the issues he addresses and the ones he does not. Violence is a big issue for Dave, maybe someone should look in on him before he hurts someone? His latest communication in two parts. The first is about the meeting. For those of you who just want a funny look inside the mind of a true moron, read the second part about his diet, bodytype, and powerlifting abilities. GO TEXAS!!!

DaveScot’s last email:

It’s Official: DaveScot is a weak excuse for a human being

So. DaveScot one invited me to look him up anytime I was in Austin–ostensibly so he could kill me with a chainsaw. Why would he want to do such a thing? Well, because I disagree with him about scientific issues and that’s how science is decided–chainsaws.

To Austin we trip…

…in order to trip in Austin.

No, not like that. The total mental disconnect will be even greater, however. DaveScot, the blog czar at Uncommon Descent, once invited me to look him up whenever I was in Austin. He also threatened to kill me with chainsaws–looking forward to it.

So, after many months of touring the country the opportunity has presented itself. I will be in Austin, TX on May 12 and 13. I’m sure we will talk about the wonders of Intelligent Design, how exactly he violates the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics by typing, why gravity is the strongest force in the universe, and why every Tom, Dick and Harry should be allowed to decide school curriculum.

Actually, I expect that we won’t discuss any of these things because DaveTard will be conveniently absent. We’ll see; the improbable does sometimes occur.

It seems I may have another tour booked talking to crackpots. Here and here.

If you have any questions that you would like me to ask DaveScot, post them here or at the original thread.

In which Blipey appears in a video of dubious quality

So, I find myself at an audiion callback. In general, this is a great thing. However, these auditions happened to be in the middle of a very long national tour. Still, this is a good thing. The callback is going very well, they like my grasp of dialects, my physical performance, the fact that I do a lot of variety-entertainment stuff. Then we get to the part where they ask me for a tape demonstrating my stilt-walking ability.

Hmmm. I only packed 6 days worth of clothes, a few books, and my laptop. And this doesn’t even take into account the fact that I have very little stilt-walking on tape. I have a lot of juggling, a good amount of knife throwing and fire-eating, and all kinds of interactive corporate stuff on tape. Stilts? Not so much. So, of course, I say, “Certainly I can get a tape to you.”

I’m saying this as my inner self is screaming, “Da hell??? Where are you going to get a tape of you stilt-walking? You’re on the road with no stilts, no stilt pants, and almost no juggling stuff….”

No problem. It just takes one free day, say on a weekend. You put on some stilts made from stuff at the local hardware store. You go to a rec center in the area (because it is ice cold outside). You take a couple minutes of video and “viola!”

Thank goodness I had the presence of mind at the callback to say of the video, “…well, it won’t be great quality.” So my only disappointment is that there were no people around to interact with (damn 20-something weather). That’s the sort of thing that really sells variety arts performance. Oh well.

Continuing Our Non-posting of Anna Nicole Smith

What the hell? These are search terms that people found A Clown in the Middle with today.

Search Views

anna nicole clown face 20
anna nicole clown 6
ANNA NICOLE CLOWN FACE 3
anne nicole smith clown face 2
anna nichole clown 2
anna clown face 1
annanicole smith acting as a clown 1

What the hell? Do these people not have anything better to do? What exactly is the obsession with famous people who are famous for being famous? I don’t get it. There is something about the juxtaposition of Anna Nicole Smith & clown face that I really like, however.
